Piane Alte
About one mile towards Piombino from Santa Lucia’s Pinnacle are the “Piane Alte”.
It is not a true shoal, but a point where the seabed rises from over 50 meters up to about 30 meters on the north side, forming on the south side a beautiful rocky ledge rich in crevices and cracks.
Here we find numerous lobsters, groupers, brown meagre, conger eels, moray eels and all around schools of seabream and hunting dentex, interspersed with some solitary barracuda.
Being the only rocky point for miles and miles of sandy seabed, this represents a hunting ground for pelagic fish and a shelter for other species that establish their dens in this area.
Undoubtedly an interesting dive, although reserved for experienced divers, especially due to the need to carry out descent and ascent in blue water without rocky walls as reference.
