Elba Island

Scoglietto – Big Caves

Starting from the wall of Scoglietto, you head offshore until reaching a ledge characterized by yellow gorgonians (Eunicella cavolini) with small-spotted catshark eggs attached and fragmented by cracks colonized by sea daisies (Parazoanthus).

At 30 meters depth, three large consecutive caverns are encountered, into which it is possible to penetrate for a few meters. The ceilings are completely covered by numerous species of sponges, in particular yellow sponges (Aplysina, Haliclona and Axinella), and inside it is possible to encounter lobsters, European lobsters and colorful nudibranchs.

On exiting, it is very impressive to observe the blue windows where bonito, little tunny often pass and it is not uncommon to encounter ocean sunfish (Mola mola).

The ledge ends on the sand at about 40 meters, where the dens of large groupers and forkbeards (Phycis phycis), now accustomed to the presence of divers, can be found.

Returning towards the boat, it is easy to encounter the resident schools of barracuda throughout the Scoglietto area.
