Elba Island

Scoglietto – Gorgonian Pinnacle

The pinnacle is completely covered with red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) with fans reaching one meter in diameter, on which small-spotted catshark eggs are always present. In fact, it is not uncommon to encounter specimens of small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) hidden in the cracks, which are always inhabited by dozens of lobsters. Very often, when reaching the dome, we are surrounded by a large resident school of little tunny curious about the presence of divers. Given the almost untouched area and the considerable depth, it is not uncommon to come across very particular species or individuals of remarkable size… such as a spiny spider crab (Maja squinado) with a diameter of 40 cm! Beside the pinnacle there is an old abandoned fish trap inhabited by a huge forkbeard (Phycis phycis), and after observing it we return towards Scoglietto accompanied by large pelagic fish swimming in the blue to end the dive on the North wall. This is a dive reserved for technical divers, ideal for deep diving courses with Nitrox decompression cylinder or for groups of technical divers.
