Elba Island

Slim Rock

Between Cape Nasuto and cape Madonna we notice a narrow rocky peninsula that interrupts the inlet of cliffs overlooking the sea; this point is called Slim Rock.

Here the sea is usually calm, especially when the wind blows from the south, and after mooring it is pleasant to enjoy the landscape above us, but the best spectacle at this site is underwater.

We descend onto a Posidonia meadow gently swaying with the movement of the waves, but after a few meters the plants end abruptly, giving way to a white sandy plateau.

At 18 meters depth we encounter a first large rock encrusted with colorful sponges and inhabited by conger eels, moray eels and octopus. We skirt it on the east side and notice a second one a little further ahead at about 24 meters depth, then a third, a fourth, a fifth and so on… so that before realizing it we are already at 40 meters and must stop.

Here we find numerous lobsters and sometimes a European lobster, but we have also found a large ocean sunfish (Mola mola) waiting for us… truly a unique spectacle.

On the way back we follow a tangle of entangled nets now colonized by long tube worms and choose each time which route to follow to return towards the wall where we carry out our safety stop.
