Elba Island

Yellow peak’s

The yellow peak’s pinnacle is so called because on its summit there is a rocky peak completely covered with Parazoanthus.

This rocky dome is part of the ridge that, thousands of years ago, extended from Punta della Guardiola to Cape Enfola. Now almost entirely covered by sand, it leaves some peaks emerging from the seabed, including Leccia Pinnacle, Semaforo Pinnacle and this last site, which presents the same characteristics: beautiful red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) and yellow gorgonians (Eunicella cavolini), as well as Parerythropodium coralloides which, with its purplish-red color and yellow polyps, colonizes dead gorgonians.

Here too it is easy to find numerous lobsters (Palinurus elephas) and reef fish, while sightings of pelagic fish are more difficult; however, in the month of June it is common to find ocean sunfish (Mola mola) circling over the summit. Harder to spot due to its camouflage but present at this site is a large anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius), which has often posed for photographers and videographers.
